Director Biography - Chandra Kirana Saputra

Born in Jakarta on October 19, 2000, with the name Chandra Kirana Saputra, I am the eldest of three siblings. My interest in the world of filmmaking began when I was still a child. My mother often took me to the cinema to watch movies. Besides that, during my childhood, she frequently bought DVD films. Whenever she came home from work, we would always watch movies together. Later, I found out that my sibling started a career in the entertainment industry as a soap opera actor. My mother was interested in taking me to witness the filmmaking process. Then, at a certain moment, I was invited to visit a shooting location, and there, I became deeply fascinated with the world of filmmaking. Eventually, I decided to follow in my sibling's footsteps and become an actor.

As time passed and I immersed myself in the world of acting, I met a director who motivated me not only to act in front of the screen but also to study the art of directing. Consequently, I began to gradually learn about directing. Growing up in an environment filled with creative individuals fueled my curiosity about audiovisual forms, and from there, I became interested in exploring the world of filmmaking, leading me to choose a vocational high school majoring in broadcasting.

Later, my parents noticed my dedication to filmmaking during high school, as I enjoyed creating short films and even won some competitions. With their support, I decided to enrol in the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, where I have been focused on becoming a director.

Director Statement

Football is a sport that is loved by the majority of people of all ages. It is popular among people of all age groups, and many children aspire to become professional football players. With the intense pressure in competitions, football teaches cooperation, sportsmanship, and mentality. Players experience this pressure from an early age, having to develop strong mental and physical attributes. The mental health of football players should also be closely monitored.

Through the film "Penalti," the director attempts to convey how much self-confidence can influence a person's mentality. The more uncertain and unsure someone is about themselves, the more likely they are to face their fears. Unfortunately, this tragedy can already be experienced by a young child who feels burdened by the high expectations placed upon them, making them anxious about their actions. The audience is made to enter Japra's mind, witnessing how chaotic his thoughts become due to several distractions from his surroundings.

Thus, this film can be an expression of how disturbances in one's environment can affect their thoughts. The director hopes that the audience will realize that ultimately, doubting one's abilities because of what others say or do around them will only harm themselves. When watching this film, the director wants the audience to feel that even a young child can be under immense pressure. This serves as a reflection to understand the feelings of fellow human beings. The abundance of negative thoughts about oneself can worsen emotional pressure.
