Harold, a young, Black man, has nightmares of drowning. He wakes up in the car, as his best friend, Maritza is driving them to Ocean City, Maryland, for the last of their summer vacation before their final year of college.
Arthur, another young, Black man, works as a lifeguard with the Ocean City Beach Patrol. One day, he sees his friend and colleague, Vince get caught in a fierce wave. Arthur saves Vince. Afterward, Vince notices Maritza and Harold on social media. They run into the vacationers after cruising the boardwalk and invite them out for drinks and dancing.
Outside the bar, Harold learns about Arthur's homophobic father. The next day, Arthur decides to share his love of the beach and the sea, but he realizes Harold is aquaphobic. Arthur tries to help Harold overcome his fear with some swimming lessons at their hotel pool, but it doesn't go well.
Harold tries to have fun with Arthur away from the water. They even hook up that night, but Arthur doesn't see a future between the two. Finally, Harold decides to show Arthur that he can overcome his fears with a deep dive into the ocean.
