Cory Steele is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and cinephile, originally from South Florida. A film school graduate, Cory began his career working on sets as a production assistant while funding and creating short films on his own. Now an established filmmaker—and a prime example of the duality of man (his top Spotify artists include Future and Celine Dion)—Cory aims to be a distinctive voice in the industry, blending his practical on-set experience with his artistic sensibilities and a meta-formal approach to storytelling.
My focus is on the people, places, and events that shape us during our youth. Through my work, I aim to highlight the importance of gaining the perspective, as adults, to look inward and confront our past selves—to uncover why we are the way we are. Why do some of us become fragile, emotional, or angry? I want to share my belief that the peaks and valleys of human emotion don’t exist in isolation. For me, movies are a form of self-therapy, and I believe that collective self-reflection through art can make the world a better place.
Over the past ten years, I’ve worked as a dedicated production assistant on a wide range of projects—from studio features to Emmy-winning TV series to reality television. I saved up my earnings from these often minimum-wage jobs to create short films using whatever resources I could gather. These experiences have taught me so much on a technical level, but more importantly, they’ve helped me discover my true sensibilities as a filmmaker.
