Director Statement

My name is Sanmi Oguntunde and I am the writer of this project. This film is very dear to my heart, because I was struggling with my mental health when I wrote this. To be precise I had been diagnosed with COVID and was self-isolating at the time. I wanted to rush my recovery so that I could get back to doing what I did best, but I learnt then that there is peace in patience.

I based my film around my circumstances at the time. I have a friend called Tyrelle who would drive around in LA with me singing Drake lyrics and I thought about what would happen if we got stopped by the police just once. If things escalated, how would I achieve justice? When searching for justice, patience is required in order to find peace and in finding peace, a good mental health is maintained and the right decisions can be made. The message is the title.

Furthermore, this is a film about men's mental health and how it is not taken seriously enough. There are men who feel that they cannot be vulnerable around each other because they are afraid that they will be mocked or misunderstood. They put on a hard exterior and shut everyone out. I wanted to explore the effects of police brutality on mental health, but with a more personal approach by establishing the protagonist as an international student and this in turn focuses on the universality of these issues.
