Director Biography - Tania Mendoza, Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana

Tania Mendoza is a childhood arrival and DREAMer mom who was deported to México after being arrested and processed by ICE. She narrates her deportation experience and coming of age in Los Angeles, CA.

Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana is a fourth year chicanx Ph.D. Candidate at the University of California Davis working towards a Ph.D. in Spanish with an emphasis on (im)migrant Human Rights. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Fresno State. She is the lead artist of the Playas de Tijuana Mural Project.

Both Mendoza and De La Cruz co-founded and direct DREAM Will Childhood Arrivals, a binational support network for deported childhood arrivals who currently live in Tijuana, Mexico.

Director Statement

Partir es un poco morir (2020) is a digital story documentary on Tania’s unethical deportation. She narrates her family's attempt to legalize their status, but are tricked by dishonest immigration lawyers. The family then lives with a deportation order, which eventually triggers Tania's deportation after a domestic dispute. Her deportation causes her family separation, and she is deported to Mexico, leaving behind her daughter Hailey.
