Director Biography - Michael Gilbertie

My name is Michael Gilbertie, and I'm an amateur Filmmaker from Glastonbury, Connecticut. Over the years I've made short films in many different genres, ranging from horror to comedy. I've been an editor, a producer, a writer, an actor, and even a stuntman, but ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a Director. Currently, I am a Cinema Major at San Francisco State University.

Director Statement

PAPERBOY stands as the single most difficult production I have ever helmed. I originally wrote the screenplay when I was fifteen years old, not knowing just how much of a monster this seven page screenplay would become. Test shooting began in December of 2018, to see if what I wrote in the script was actually possible with my skeleton crew of high school classmates. As it turned out: it was, but not in the winter. We started production in April of 2019, and shot on the weekends every chance we could. Burdened by the heat, the ever changing New England weather, and how busy the location we shot in was, the shooting schedule ballooned, with principle photography taking place in 2019, and second unit photography following in 2020. The film was shot without sound, and with multiple actors mounting the bicycle to portray the Paperboy. Finally on June 11, 2021, PAPERBOY was released to YouTube, becoming the most viewed film I've ever made. This film, out of all the movies I've made so far, is my favorite. It shows in its runtime how much I've grown as a filmmaker, and I'm so excited to finally be able to share it.
