PRICE OF LIFE

Director Statement

There is a current epidemic of life coaches. Everyone wants the ideal life. Just as self elected messiahs seek affirmation of their ego, we give narcissists the microphone. In an era where religion and spiritual leaders have been stripped away, instead we idolise demagogues, politicians, corporations and celebrities. In a society with a paradoxical impulse for reflexive cynicism and hero worship it’s difficult to distinguish demigods from leaders.

We grow up hearing tales of damsels in distress and knights in shining armour so from an early age we are programmed to believe that for every victim there is a saviour. Enter the messiah, the cult leader, the one to heal us. But what kind of person fills this role? Affirmation feeds the leaders ego, filling them with a sense of limitless power. Narcissists need our need and so we see the victim and rescuer complexes play out in an endless cycle.
