It was difficult to write this script and it has been a story that I feel I’ve been trying to tell for a long time but never quite found a way to truly express it. Having dealt with my own long term undiagnosed mental health issues I knew the sensation was best realised through film. But how? During the pandemic I had a lot of time to really assess and look at myself and what it meant to be a film director. During this time I assessed my work and delved deeper into my studies, recalling previous nuggets of inspiration and information. One of them came from the great Stanley Kubrick. This completely freed my mind as to how I could realise this film.
To paraphrase the great man he said, if it can be thought it can be film and that cinema is more like music than it is fiction. Filmmakers can often be inhibited by the idea of finding the story or the narrative in a dramatic or performance sense. However, the power of cinema is the same as that of music. A piece of music has no narrative story to follow but the music itself is the story. The loudness, the tempo, the pitch, tells us how the music is meant to feel and so communicates a story. There’s something about watching a film that can be as comforting as a knowing look; a supportive glance. Sometimes that’s all we need.
