Director Statement

When I shot this film, I was very interested in “ The little prince” and I do use some of the idea from it. Also I refer some of the filming techniques and the art from other movies such as Amelie or the style like Wes Anderson…

Chinese traditional medicine shop and chewy gum are the element that I’m pretty interested in.
Besides I’m a fan of Chinese medicine, I also did some research during the filming. I discover that this is a significant symbol in the Chinese culture and by that I want to make an conflict between Chinese culture and the western culture.
And to the matter of “ Desire” I think this is not kind of thing that we can decide which is bad or good because sometimes when we say “ no” it is also a form of desire.

Penny’s mother is a total control freak to PENNY and RJ represent the desire of giving as much as like his career - a mailman, he just keep giving and delivering. From the desire of collecting pictures from magazines to collecting candy even wants to eat them. These three characters are connected.

And one of the element is apple and granny green apple. In the beginning of Penny’s fantasy world there is a picture “the son of man” by a surrealism painter - Margret.
"Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.

People are always drawn to the unknown and the things that are forbidden. And you can also say that the conflict is between ” Visible or visible but blinding”

Apple and granny green apple are also a metaphor of the relationships between Penny and RJ . We don’t certainly know what’s their relationship, lover or just friend. So granny green apple means friendship and apple would be the forbidden fruit in love.
