'PAWNS' was a very difficult script to write because of what we were trying to explore. The writer, David Barbeschi, and I, had a lot of discussions as to where the story was going and how we were going to get there. After reading the first draft multiple times, it became clear that the film that had been written was really about humanity, at a time like that, these men realise that they have no reason to kill each other and through dialogue they become more understanding of the person sat across from one another, despite what the consequences may be.

The main goal was not to glorify the brutal aspects of war, but to give a perspective on what it would have been like for these young men. Discussions with industry experts lead me to understand that this film almost holds a mirror up to society saying: "All it takes is just one or two people to make a change, just fight for what you believe in and don’t worry or care about what other people may think of you as long as you know what you are doing is worth fighting for".

A good story is really the only reason why I want to make films. Having the ability to move an audience and connect with them emotionally is something that is most fascinating to me. It is important for me to establish if the script is strong enough i.e. if the dialogue flows and most importantly works. Only then will the character's true emotions show.
