Writer Biography - Deanne Ostrowski, Devlin Ostrowski

My name is Deanne, but I go by Deah. I grew up for the first part of my life running the streets of Detroit and Delray as one of many feral kids of the 70's. I am a mixture of Romani Gypsy, Hungarian, and French Canadian. Most of my family came to America in the late 1940's to escape WW1I. Sadly, many of my Gypsy family that remained in Europe lost their lives in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany.

I guess you could say I'm a new writer. Although I've been writing since I was a kid...I'm new to writing and showing people. I've also never been published. It wasn't till my son showed his talent for writing that my writing really took off. He's autistic and I think he's brilliant. He told me, "Mom, write what you know!" That's when the stories came pouring out. "Choice's Maelstrom" is about my family, "Draco's Saddle" showcases how my son was bullied as a teen, and "Owen" is a dream I had. This incredible young man helped me in so many ways from giving storyline advice and sass to my dialogue to fixing my writer's block with humor. I'm so lucky to be his mom.

I hope you like our stories. I'm hoping these film festivals will help us find an agent and move on to more interesting things..... Or hurt my feelings with enough honesty so I can see what I'm doing wrong. I deeply hope someday it will happen for he and I and I'll keep writing and working until it does.

Writer Statement

Writing has been my passion ever since I can remember. The idea that I could write a script that ends up on the silver screen gives me goosebumps! I know I'm a long way from that and I don't mind working hard to get there. Mostly, I'm here on Film Freeway to learn and grow as a writer and to have people smarter than me, like all of you, show me what I'm doing wrong. I love getting different critiques - some of them hammer down on me but they are the most important part of my future as a writer. They give me clarity and direction. Anybody who gets their feelings hurt by a critique isn't taking their writing seriously - I live on them. This is my first submission for "Owen" - a story I dreamed... of all things. I know it needs a lot of work, so - be brutal! Thanks for all you do, WIKI!
