Writer Biography - Crystal Skillman, Lauren Elder, Regina Strayhorn, Katie Rosen

Crystal Skillman is a playwright who has been expanding into audio and television; Lauren Elder is broadway performer and songwriter. When working on a musical, anxious about breaking out, they came up with the idea of Overnight Success and this story of an unlikely musical friendship that spans over years in New York City. Songwriter Regina Stayhorn (Bandits on the Run) shared songs with us as well, lending her voice to our creative development. Producer Katie Rosin (Kampfire Films) helped us flesh out the online part of the story as we developed the pilot. You can actually follow Lucy Young and Ariel Steadman online now!

Writer Statement

We have always felt like outsiders, and found our audiences did too. We also knew that there is nothing like a girlfriend to lift you up at the end of the day. We wanted to write a musical comedy where the music drives the story forward in ways you wouldn’t expect and you haven't seen yet on television, yet be a part of the tradition of musical shows like Flight of the Concords or Crazy-Ex Girlfriend. Set in New York City, these dreamers are always thinking of the next music video and see life just like that. The city has a choral sound, voicing over their thoughts, wherever they go, creating a rich soundtrack. While these lovable friends might be seen as losers to the world at large, they adore and lift each other up. While they never achieve the success in each episode they set out to achieve, they somehow find a win that keeps them going.
