Orlando FitzGerald is a filmmaker from the Devil's Glen area in Ireland, who relocated to Brooklyn more than a decade ago.
The work he makes blurs lines between documentary and fiction with the aim to facilitate new ways of thinking about science and the world around us.
His first film Na Caoinagh (2020) is an atmospheric and highly stylized nature documentary. It was shot in Ireland and outlines the seemingly alien world of Bryophytes - their history and importance, as well the risks they face.
Orlando's latest film Dance of Earth (2025) started out as a film about rocks, but as production progressed, another story began to be told: a story of a world in constant change. The film is a conversation between that world and the seemingly permanent world of stone.
With an extensive background in music, Orlando's approach to making films is invariably intertwined with sound. When he scores his films he uses music to emphasize the otherworldly qualities of the natural subjects, with the intent to accentuate their character, bridging an unspoken gap between them and the viewer.
