I consider film to be an art form that most people can relate to. It's hard to relate to a painting until you know the artist's intent. But in film, you can relate to a character or scenario for an hour and thirty minutes. And within this hour and thirty minutes, you can change someone's life or viewpoint. The relationship between the screen and the audience is something I constantly think about when making a film. Taking the time and realizing how would this sound, look, and make the audience feel. To make all this happen you have to study more than film. You can learn about Tarkovsky, Ozu, Scorsese, and Spielberg. But that's not enough, if you only watch Spielberg films you will only know how to make Spielberg film. You should study history, politics, culture, and language. Pick them all in no particular order. This is how you make great films!
