One On One is a story I wrote based on experiences I have felt and witnessed while I played high school basketball. It is also based on things I have noticed in women’s college basketball today. This story is about women’s sports, the friendship around them and the mental health of all college athletes. We focus on the hype and positive stories in college athletics, but we never take an in depth look at the mental health of college athletes. In particular the mental health of athletes who are stars in their sport. This short film tells the story of two friends in two different sports who struggled mentally in college. My goal for this film, as Director, is to bring awareness for the mental health of college athletes. To begin a conversation around how college athletes can struggle with being a star and keeping up with the sport on a higher level. I want to encourage athletes and college students that they are never alone, that they have support in their friends and family. I wanted this film to begin by being inside Avery’s head and end on a happier tone as she walks together with Maria. I hope this story is inspiring and a comfort to the audiences that watch it.
