One Day in GaoYi

On village GaoYi(Hunan, China)'s main street, a public announcement is posted to recruit actors for government cultural activities, and the villagers watch with great interest. The announcement does not disturb the rhythm of their daily life. Everything in the village goes on methodically, the butcher slaughters the meat, the captain ferries back and forth. The villagers' life scenes are actually the most natural and real performance.

Jiaxuan Xiao - Master of Cinema Production from Depaul University, Chicago. Working on new media video and experimental art on contemporary image.

Muqiu Qin - Bachelor of Digital Media Art from Communication University of China. Freelance creator, devoted to pluralistic expression of image in contemporary Chinese context.

Director Statement

GaoYi is an ancient village located in Hunan province, it is expected to be the second FengHuang（A famous tourist spot in China), but it has not yet been developed. Villagers have seen a variety of governors, they are familiar with cameras, but they have not been exposed to a large number of tourists. People in GaoYi don’t perform in front of camera, nor will they sell the original ecological concept. During our shooting, the villagers didn’t pay attention to the camera, they're regardless of the cinematographer. The life of each villager is like a natural performance. We believe such a state exists only in this particular period. GaoYi is like a fish tank which has the human ecology completely different from other villages. We observed and recorded objectively, tried to avoid the narrative of audio-visual language, to make the film achieve a kind of Deleuze type liquid image style, it is flowing, it avoids hypothetical concept and theme.
