On a Short Leash

In the webseries “Na Rédea Curta” (On a Short Leash), Sulivã Bispo plays Mainha (Mom), a single black mother, and Thiago Almasy plays Júnior, her apathetic son, both living together in the outskirts of Salvador (capital of Bahia, a Brazilian state). The webseries is written and directed by Almasy himself and narrates the everyday life of a mother trying to raise her son; Júnior is often in trouble and Mainha is always ready to teach him a lesson. Between the lines, the project explores a singular Bahia and the way its people express themselves, entertaining the viewers by valuing the Bahian people way of talking, embracing the popular culture that is spread through the orality. In less than a year, these two young actors have developed such an amazing passion and commotion in their fanbase that they could turn into reality the dream of having Salvador theaters crowded to full capacity to see Mainha and Júnior in an adapted play performed 16 times during two seasons, after reaching the mark of 20 million of views on the internet.
