On Dawgs in Super 16
This over-the-top experiment takes on a “film-noir” approach and is set after a criminal becomes a viable witness to a crime while committing one. Paid off by a high profile syndicate, his testimony doesn’t go according to plan, now out on bail and unknowingly with a price on his head he gets more than what he’s bargained for.

Born and raised in an immigrant family in Roxbury, Massachusetts Donté Thomas is an educator, filmmaker, and installation artist. Beginning as a journalism student at Morehead State University, Donté found himself drawn to film. He has worked in the media industry for over 10 years, creating motion and still graphics at design houses, re-trafficking analytics at engineering firms, and working with award winning filmmakers, playwrights and curators. He has also been a media educator in the Boston Public Schools.
Shooting the film was very interesting. Being it my first film shot on the arriflex sr1 using super16mm film. I own a Sony FS7 and the difference between the two is evident. I decided to use Eastman Kodak b/w 7222 film stock. It was literally what the film demanded; super high contrast, medium grain and a sharpness to accent the hard lighting we used. The story was inspired by Boston slang term “on dawgs” which means to swear on your dead friends or loved ones. It’s pretty much saying “for real”. As an artist, you need to have a gimmick to attract attention and I believe we did just that with this film.
