Old Oak Tree

Old Oak Tree
V1
Hands on hips
She’s got too much going on
But the sun has halfway set
The curtain’s halfway drawn
With a twinkle in her eye
And a good stiff double shot of rye…

PreCH/ CH
Nobody
No, nobody
Gonna hold her back, throw her off the track,
you’ll see
She got her roots from her mother,
She’s like an old oak tree

V2
Had to fight him off
He never saw much of this grit
But the grass had overgrown
The house crumbling bit by bit
With a steely look at him
As she walked on by the light getting dim…

PreCH/CH
She knew nobody
No, nobody
Gonna hold her back, throw her off the track
you’ll see
She’s got good roots from her father
That old oak tree

BRIDGE
She doesn’t want to face it alone
It would just be easier
to stay the hell at home
She should just fall back and surrender
She can do all this on her own
Build her happy home
Leave him in the dust.
on that road she’s outgrown.

V3
Looking back now
She knows she pulled a royal flush
The choice she made that day
Lead her to a gold rush
Without a second thought of him,
She knows the day she left she played to win

PreCH/ CH
She knew that nobody
Yeah, nobody
Was gonna hold her back, throw her off the track,
you’d see
She knew nobody,
Oooh nobody
Was gonna hold her back, throw her off the track,
You see
She had the roots from her family,
She’s like an old oak tree .

Artist Biography

Singer-songwriter Evelynne Ross wants her listeners to feel all the
feels! Her new EP Against the Fence does just that with powerful
melodies and heartfelt storytelling.
By far her favourite activity as a kid was spending countless hours with
her father’s extensive record collection, learning the words to every
song so she could sing them back to her family in regular living room
performances. By her teens and throughout high school she began
performing regularly in various duos/trios and in her early twenties,
she sold her car and few worldly possessions and moved to Barbados
with a loose plan to record jingles for Bajan radio. There, she
recorded a variety of jingles and spent time in Eddy Grant’s studio
with The Rolling Stones while they wrote and recorded their hit album
Steel Wheels. Upon her return to Toronto, she started a family and
soon after started her band, Evolution, which has built a following in
venues throughout Ontario. Although she started writing original
music in her 20’s, fans have been asking her do more of her original
material so she's now focusing all of her attention on playing her own
music as an original artist.

Artist Statement

Old Oak Tree is a song about a young woman, at the end of her rope in a toxic relationship, who finally had had enough and drew up the courage knowing that as hard as it would be, it was time to leave. The theme and song's chorous reference how nobody could hold her back once she had decided to "go for it" as she got her guts and her resolve from her mother, father and family via her strong family upbringing. The song tells a story of deep roots, a strong core/spirit, from a strong family (old oak tree analogy) and her role models that ultimately gave her the foundation that led to her finding the courage to walk out the door and leave the marriage and relationship behind forever.
