Odysseus in the fields
A semi-abstract hand-drawn film reflecting on emigration.
My story is about disorientation, loss of ground under my feet. Therefore, the images of the world are unstable, have no form, disintegrate like blades of grass in the wind. Sounds do not add up to words: the former ones are lost, the new ones have not yet been mastered …
My inner experience requires half abstract, non-narrative, expressive form of representation.
As if this is the only feeling of space in which the soul must find guidance, stability and lightness at the same time. To germinate or take off.
And there are many sounds (almost smells) here.
As if Odysseus could feel lost in the fields.
The script was written in poetic form

A semi-abstract hand-drawn film reflecting on emigration.
About how the perception of a person, his inner feelings change.
The film is very important to me as it is my personal visual, wordless representation of the first
years after repatriation.
Watching how old ways of communication, symbols, habits fall apart, how emotional ties with a past
life are torn, how the sense of self and space is transformed...
As if there was a language, but it disappeared, and a new one has not yet formed ...
Lined pages of a non-existent diary, where visual images are instead of words...
A person suddenly finds himself as if in a vacuum: sounds, shapes, smells are completely
different ... they need to be recognized, mastered ...
Therefore, there is neither a city nor people here - only images that disintegrate like dry blades of
grass and unite into something new.
Hence the motive of endless transformations... Who am I now? Where I am? Do I exist? Like
shedding old skin... Taking shape. Imperfection of forms, incompleteness, abstraction...
Odysseus.
Journey... The image of the Field (Fields) is both concrete (stones, grass, sounds of the steppe...)
and abstract (symbolism of states-transitions).
This is a space-character.
In a sense, the Field is the antagonist of Man.
The field is the horizontal, the Earth, so Man pushes away from it, struggles with the horizon, with
his attachment to space, to his own memories.
In this system Man is vertical.
The Field is the only sensation of space in which the soul must find guidance, stability and lightness
at the same time. To germinate or take off.
And there are also many sounds (almost smells), almost tangible, concrete and unreal.
As if Odysseus could feel lost in the Fields.
This is an experimental film that combines the genres of Documentary animation
(autobiographical experience), Pure cinema (abstract and non-narrative cinema) and Poetic
cinema (imagery and poetic, intuitive structure and editing).
The film is conceived as a series of state-of-the-art paintings in the technique of hand-drawn
animation with elements of frame-by-frame shooting. I intend to combine different techniques:
painting on wet paper, painting on glass, classical frame-by-frame animation on paper, object
abstract animation.
The structure of the film is unsteady and it is important for me to maintain unpredictability and
spontaneity in the process of work.
Documentary animation may not be an illustration of specific stories, but a study of internal states,
poetry.
In this aesthetic method, I see a challenge to tradition and innovation.
