BIO
After completing his BFA in Film/Video at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1986, David Kelley directed and produced the documentary film The Light of Ronchamp, about architect Le Corbusier’s Chapel in Ronchamp, France. His varied career includes directing over 70 commercials and music videos for artists such as Kristin Hersh and Throwing Muses.
David collaborated co-directed, with illustrator / photographer Butch Belaire on the spot for Steve Madden Shoes, Chick Walker (featured in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street), it was honored for direction and animation by the prestigious AICP and is part of the permanent collection at The Museum of Modern Art. He was a finalist in the First Boards Awards for "Best New Directors of 2002." While at Curious Pictures in NYC, he created and directed many animated spots and motion graphics, including branding for ABC Sports' Super Bowl. His work for Lavazza Coffee (Armando Testa / Little Bull) in Torino, Italy, consisting of 12 two-minute spots featuring life size, live action puppets and stop motion animation, earned two Golden Art Director awards at ADCI (Art Directors Club Italiano) in 2006. In May 2006, David founded his own production studio, Cabimat Inc.
In 2014, he consulted, directed, and created the look for Wegman’s Supermarkets' cooking video marketing project, Menu in Motion. David recently completed collaborations with Michelin-starred celebrity chef David Bouley, creating cooking technique and "Mise En Place Building Blocks" videos for healthy cuisine; Chef Bouley recently passed away February 2024.
For the past 12 years, he and his production company, Cabimat Inc., have worked with BMW North America on numerous commercials and branded film projects. David’s company has also helped develop the look, special effects, design, typography, and titles for many TV series, including Hulu’s Hillary (Hillary Clinton’s authorized biography) and Killer Sally, a three-part series streaming on Netflix, both directed by Nanette Burstein. Cabimat produced special effects, short vignettes, animation, the look, and typography for John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams, a six-part series streaming on NBC Peacock, and Haunted, a Netflix series that ran for three straight seasons, both directed by Jordan Roberts.
David Kelley collaborated with recording artist Roger Wasson to score and produce the music and sound design for MTV’s on-air package for two consecutive years and scored music for multiple BMW film projects. He has released three albums and five singles with his bands "Clergy of the Impossible," "Snifter," and "DC-6."
David is now working with techniques and tools related to the AI content manipulation world to explore whether creating narrative visual pieces has a place in the future of motion graphics, animation, storytelling, art (especially surreal and unexpected outcomes), and the moving image. His most recent music video, "Mein Ballen" by Supercasanova, has won over 9 awards.
