OMI
OMI is an ode to water on a thin surface of a tight wire.
Inspired by mythologies of water deities, the short film OMI is a blend of dance and circus, combining elements of both afro-Cuban and Finnish folklore.
Exploring the similarities of these opposite cultures and balancing within duality, OMI pays homage to the water deity Yemaya and the serene Finnish landscape of lakes and forests.

Specialized in dancing on a tight wire, Mira Ravald is a Helsinki-based performing artist working within dance, contemporary circus and physical theatre.
With her company Portmanteau, in collaboration with the visual / circus artist Luis Sartori do Vale, Mira has created two award-winning full-length performances “Portmanteau” and “Piste, piste, piste”. Both of the multidisciplinary and poetically-narrated shows have been warmly received by the public and critics alike.
With her solo works Mira is interested in working in the borderline of dance and circus. Following that principle, as a first-time filmmaker she has produced the short film OMI (2020), that has gained international acknowledgement for its experimental kind.
I am interested in working on the borderline of dance and circus, aiming to entwine those art forms into a harmonic unity, giving importance to musicality, sensitivity and poetic motion.
The range of human emotions and different cultural influences are among my inspirations. I am fascinated by the afro-Cuban culture, which often influences my artistic research with its mythological, musical and corporal elements.
Working through movement based practices and researching the symbolics of balance, I’m interested in exploring the potential of the tight wire as a narrative tool and scenographic element as well as developing it as a discipline through dance, in search of new perspectives and movement qualities. “
