Ô Criatura: Navigating (dis)location is a documentary exploring an East Van Latinx artist’s journey in search for identity and belonging. This is a film about understanding self, how others perceive you and how you make sense of the different markers that define you, such as gender, sexuality, mother tongue and nationality.

Director Biography - Andréa Monteiro

Andréa Monteiro (she/they) is a Brazilian-Canadian documentary filmmaker, interdisciplinary artist and nurse scholar based in Vancouver, BC. Her practice exists at the intersections of activism, filmmaking and academia, where she explores themes of identity, racialization, migration, displacement and climate grief. With a PhD in nursing from the University of Victoria (2018) and a Climate Psychology Certificate from the California Institute of Integral Studies (2023), Andréa brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective that centers on social and environmental justice.
Her films have screened at Vancouver Queer Film Festival (2019), Vancouver Latin American Film Festival (2019), Oaxaca FilmFest (2019), and Toronto Queer Film Festival (2019). Recent participatory projects include performances at Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery (2023) and Peter Wall Institute (2023). She was a Wall Scholar Digital Artist (2022-23), a VIFF Catalyst Alumni (2023), and a Liberated Planet Studio Artist/Researcher (2024).
As an uninvited visitor, Andréa acknowledges with respect the land on which she lives and creates in the traditional, ancestral and unneeded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sə̓lílwətaʔɬSelilwitulh (Tsleil- Waututh Nations).
