OCCHIO

An important sensory organ, the eye, is damaged. The exhausting healing process takes us on an inner journey full of pain, fragility and mental unrest, in which even superstition and witchcraft seem to have an influence on recovery.

Director Statement

The film OCCHIO (Eye) is based on my own experiences with pain. My sensory organ was severely damaged in a seemingly trivial accident and for the first time in my life I found myself in a state of complete helplessness and dependence on others. A severe infection damaged the cornea of one eye and the pain was so intense that I lived for days in a delirium in which I could not move. The reality in the hospital room interfered with my dreams. The world also seemed blurry and difficult to perceive due to the infection. This experience was a turning point for me. I felt completely disconnected from reality, an external observer of my own life that I no longer had control over. In my film, I narrate this state of powerlessness by trying to create an immersive narrative in which the viewer becomes the patient and the camera is the damaged eye. Suffering is a necessary step in order to be able to see again.
