Experiencing Interruptions?

Notas

LOGLINE
Ain is an unknowingly genetically manipulated future soldier, searching for the secret of his origin, and as a result finds himself between the battle lines of two secretive, powerful opponents.

SYNOPSIS
In a world of deception and manipulation, you need clues, in Spanish:
las “Notas”, that can show you the way to light…

But Ain will be given nothing more than clues to his own history and destiny. Instead, he will be the object of stalking, lies and violence, while he and his girlfriend, Anzu, flee from Paris to a remote Mediterranean island.

What will he discover in that highly guarded monastery, in which the military also seems to be so interested? And who is this secretive stranger named Core, who initially pretends to be Ain’s ally?

Tormented by recurring, unsettling visions of a monk, Ain must first fight against both inner and external daemons, who have been torturing him for so long.

Nothing is as it appears. The boundaries between good and evil are rapidly blurred, while a net of continuous surveillance tightens ever closer on them. The secret monitoring system soon no longer relies exclusively on cameras, but on the undercover agents, Core and Dave.

When the two of them apparently accidentally meet the couple and join them on their road trip, the situation reaches a crisis: finally, there is a deadly struggle between Ain and Dave.

Anzu is so appalled by Ain’s violent behavior that she takes flight. While Core takes Ain’s side, contrary to his orders, and fights with him to the monastery. The well-fortified monks kill Core, but Ain is able to reach their headquarters, where he finally discovers the truth.

The monks have been fighting a military conspiracy, which does not shy from scientific experiments with human beings. The goal is to create a race of genetically manipulated clone warriors. Ain is unknowingly a new prototype, while the monks and Core are older models.

When Ain destroys the proof of his own design, another Core appears—and this one is not on Ain’s side. He kills Ain. At least he appears to…

But the military experiment named Ain is not so easily eliminated. Months later, we see that he is still alive and has a child with Anzu. The battle has just begun…

Director Biography - René Schulz

Some people call him “Crazy René”.

It all started when his grandpa bought a videocamera which he allowed his grandson to use. René Schulz was 12 years old, and his fascination with moving pictures and stories had found a release valve. It didn’t take long until he got his very own first film camera, a Sanyo 8mm.

At the Bavarian Academy for Television (BAF), he specialized in video camera and started editing on what was at that time the one and only editing equipment – Avid.

He had discovered the next step in the process of filmmaking: editing. Shortly thereafter, René started working as an editor at Filmhaus. As he tells us: “It was Filmhaus that brought me to Berlin, the “Mecca of Madness, Freedom and Distortion”. I had found my home! It was the turning point in my life. I spent all my days working as a freelance editor, and all my nights making films.”

Now René has been working on his biggest project to date: with no subsidies and entirely self-financed: NOTAS. His first feature film, for which he not only wrote the screenplay, but also was both the producer and director.

Director Statement

“I’m a mutilated child of the do-it-yourself-subculture. No restrictions, but redefining and letting your mind run wild. (The Cavernous, the Broken, the Destroyed - all signs of life – are at the same time my demons and my inspiration.) The drive to create would lead me anywhere. The world is my playground “.
