Noodles

The world is a wasteland, and Nobody will always be found taking photographs. She documents all that she finds of what has happened to the world and takes them back to her favourite place, her darkroom to develop her findings. But something is coming for her, something that she knew was going to happen from the very start. She finds comfort eating her noodles, trying to deal with what has happened and what will soon happen to her.

Director Biography - Kayleigh Pepper

Kayleigh Pepper is an aspiring production designer, currently studying at Staffordshire University, set to graduate with an Honours B.A. in Film Production in 2024. Having neurodivergence's herself she has had a battle with her identity. Not truly knowing who she was until after her diagnosis. She has learnt how neurodivergent brains work compared to atypical brains and has created stories centred around those feelings of being lost, but finding people who feel the same way. Noodles explores just this. With Kayleigh’s history in making short films with heavy production design, set creation, and historical costume Kayleigh has set out another adventurous project involving a story that pushes the story through its mise-en-scene. Taking everything, she has learnt from her time at university and other opportunities outside of education she has injected into the storytelling of her short film, Noodles

Director Statement

Noodles is a thriller about a photographer called Nobody who documents a virus by taking pictures of dead bodies. She is obsessed and finds joy in finding different ways people have died. This story is told by breaking the fourth wall, she is documenting her findings to the audience as she has no one else to talk to.

The film explores identity and what it means to be lonely. Finding a vice can mean different things to different people, and through her trying to deal with the loss of her family and the eventual demise of herself she takes to taking pictures of what is killing her, trying to get familiar with what is to come. Something which I have been doing for some time to figure out what it means to be neurodivergent.

The exploration of colour throughout this film is something I wanted to do before I came up with the idea of Noodles. Red is the main colour throughout and for this film red means passion and comfort, her being painted in red light when she is most comfortable, for it to lead to her being ‘painted’ with the blood of her victim when away from the comfort of the dark room.

This film was shot over 4 days with a 2 day set build at the beginning of the shoot period. With a team of talented peers and some friends, this film has come together to reflect the grief people can feel when dealing with new chapters of our identity.
