No loose ends: Dom Casmurro's Masterclass
The pandemic context of 2020 led the group “Matamoscas Teatral'' to create this artistic experiment within an online platform, in which “Dom Casmurro”, one of Brazilian literature’s most important books, is performed through a "Masterclass" presented by the main character. During his lecture, Bento Santiago (Dom Casmurro himself) will try to prove his version of the facts and, indirectly, have his contradictions and inconsistencies exposed while he talks about his controversial memoirs. Are we encountering the truth or a man’s mere imagination, clouded by resentment about his life’s outcome? What social mechanisms allow such a story to be told this way? Why is Dom Casmurro such a nostalgic character and what does it tell us about Brazil?
Our work process was built collaboratively, by horizontal artistic functions, and remotely rehearsed. With countless virtual meetings throughout the year, our dramaturgy was built organically by everyone, at each rehearsal, with the particularity of being coordinated by the four actors and actresses of the project.

PV Hipólito is a director, actor, playwritter and Bachelor of Performing Arts by the University of São Paulo (USP, 2016-2020). PV has starred in over 25 theater plays and directed two: "Que Comam Brioches" (Let them eat cake) in 2019 and "Nenhuma ponta solta: a Masterclass de Dom Casmurro" (No loose ends, Dom Casmurro's Masterclass), based on Machado de Assis's novel, an online experience, which was presented in Brazil for more than 200 people in January 2021 and is now available as a film. Both of his works as a director were ellaborated by the group Matamoscas Teatral, whose one of the founding members is PV.
In the middle of 2020’s troubled context, with closed theaters and no possibility of physical meetings, Matamoscas Teatral was founded by a group of young artists. United by their desire to research Latin American artists and dissect the connection between theatrical performance and social issues, our main focus was to analyse Brazil’s national elites. “No Loose ends: Dom Casmurro's Masterclass” was romotely conceived in 2020. It constitutes a contemporary montage of one of Brazilian history’s most important literary works: “Dom Casmurro”, written by Machado de Assis.
