Director Statement

Three quadrilaterals - horizontal, vertical, and square - are the three basic composite formats of the images that surround us everywhere. We meet them in art galleries, in advertising posters, in the outlines of architecture. But today, cinema basically only takes the first of them, driving our entire lives into a horizontal 16:9 or 4:3. The rest of the geometric life forms are usually denied existence. Meanwhile, these are not just geometric shapes. Behind them are situations, emotions, and characters. The horizontal may express, for example, the compression of everyday life or relaxation, the flowing of space; the vertical - the clamping, the emotional stupor, or the proud aspiration to break through to the heavenly forces; the ideal square - absolute freedom and absolute shackling. Each situation needs its own compositional construction, its own geometric format.

What situation can give the maximum range for visual expressiveness?

This can make the situation extreme, the disaster situation. Such story is shown in the film «No incidents registered». This is a picture of an intra-family crisis unfolding against the backdrop of a false radiation alert. It’s a movie about how a catastrophe exacerbates tensions between people, and each of them has a choice to make here and now (so the protagonist Alexander has to choose between a broken family and his mistress with a small child). Some catastrophe breaks (like Alexander’s wife, who is going to shoot her little daughter, thinking that «saves» her from a painful death). Others catastrophe makes stronger (as Alexandr, who dares to confess to his wife a long-hidden cheating and who until the very end tries to save his loved ones).

This film, on the one hand, is a story of human tragedy, and, on the other hand, an attempt to expand the expressive opportunities of cinema, by telling this tragedy through different frames, through different geometries of life.
