No Fun

Explore the Dark Side of Longing with the New Short Dance Film ‘No Fun’. The balance of humor and melancholy creates an experience of unrequited love that is all too familiar to all of us.

In this short film, music forms the backdrop of a narrative about love. An immaculately dressed woman tries to get a man’s attention through increasingly frantic and expressive dance moves, but her efforts are fruitless: The man continues to ignore her. As she dances, the threat of death is ever-present, leading the viewer to wonder what lengths she might resort to if he fails to acknowledge her.

Director Biography - Duane Bruton

Growing up in the Northeast suburbs, my interest in films started in my early years while organizing and cataloging my father’s VHS collection. This fascination turned into a genuine love for movies at 16 when I found a job at Blockbuster Video.

I moved to NYC to study Illustration and Design at the New York School of Visual Arts and immediately cultivated a love for various subcultures and underground scenes.

As a self-taught filmmaker, I approach storytelling from an outsider’s perspective. I am naturally curious, and I use my design and editorial background to envision and build compelling stories that don’t always have answers.

I’m a trained visual artist who approaches filmmaking from that perspective. My movies are about being stuck in transformation, heartbreak, and the absurd cyclical humor and pain in creative’s lives. As a creator, I find the challenge of creating art while being exposed to the world’s harsh realities intriguing.

I aimed to create a movie that would stimulate me creatively and captivate the audience. The inspiration for the concept came to me while reflecting on the empty nature of social media dance videos and fashion films instead of producing a conventional music video. After working on my previous documentary, I wanted to go in the opposite direction and make a thriller infused with melodrama.

I focused more on physical interactions and placing the actors in different situations and locations. The film is all about movement and body language that evoke emotions. In addition, the music of Painted Tongues can convey disappointment and wonder. Actor Mark Romero(the boy) is also shy, awkward, and aloof, which makes his role a natural fit. On the other hand, actress Macey Fondura(the girl) has raw charisma.

We utilized the space’s atmosphere to showcase an eerie feeling of floating isolation. For this film, I thought it should be shot in a pretty realistic way—for example, there’s not much lighting, and the location is actual—but with strict framing and a relaxed, surreal look to go with the narrative.
