Ninni's story

Ninni's Story was born out of a deep pain caused by the end of a relationship. I needed to portray a female protagonist to try to atone for what I felt were my own faults by making Valentina, Ninni, choices that will improve her life. She is indeed a strong character who makes difficult decisions, even at the cost of losing her boyfriend Lorenzo. Taking a cue from what had happened to me, I wanted to talk about how an external event, uncontrollable and unpredictable, could radically change a person's life. And indeed, this happens in the short film: Valentina realizes after a miscarriage that she wants to devote herself to her theatrical ambitions and that she no longer wanted a pregnancy at only 25 years old. It was important not to make either Lorenzo or Valentina "speck" characters. Lorenzo is not the villain of the story: he is simply an insecure character who needs confirmation from the outside to feel alive and important. This way of posing perhaps originates from his father, who in a slimy way keeps telling Valentina that he is "satisfied" to become a grandfather, or perhaps from his friends, who seem with their questions to test the young, engaged couple. The fact is that on the birthday of the girlfriend, despite the latter's desire for confidentiality, he proudly announces to the guests the future. However, Lorenzo's anger, subsequent to Ninni's choice, is at least understandable. The fiancée does not make him part of any of her reasoning, not empathizing in the least with him or his desires. Likewise, however, Valentina has every right to decide for her body and her future, rejecting Lorenzo's manipulative attitude, masquerading as victimhood, and the pressure from his family and friends. The real protagonist of the film is Valentina as an adult. It is through her that we relive everything, and it is only she who has managed to face the challenges shown in the film. As we follow her workday, we discover that she had a child, but with another man, and has also become so talented that she is the head of a company theater. Valentina is thus a modern heroine, and her story tells us of a courageous girl who, growing up with difficulty, chose both career and family.

Ninni’s Story nasce da un profondo dolore causato dalla fine di una relazione. Avevo necessità di rappresentare una protagonista femminile per cercare di espiare quelle che ritenevo essere le mie colpe, facendo compiere a Valentina, Ninni, delle scelte che miglioreranno la sua vita. Lei è infatti un personaggio forte, che prende delle decisioni difficili, anche a costo di perdere il suo fidanzato Lorenzo. Prendendo spunto da ciò che mi era successo ho voluto parlare di come un evento esterno, incontrollabile e impronosticabile, potesse modificare in maniera radicale la vita di una persona. Ed effettivamente questo accade nel corto: Valentina capisce dopo un aborto spontaneo di volersi dedicare alle sue ambizioni teatrali e di non volere più una gravidanza a soli 25 anni. Era importante non rendere né Lorenzo né Valentina dei personaggi “macchietta”. Lorenzo non è il cattivo della storia: è semplicemente un personaggio insicuro, che ha bisogno di una conferma dall’esterno per sentirsi vivo e importante. Questo modo di porsi forse ha origine da suo padre, che in maniera viscida continua a dire a Valentina di essere “soddisfatto” di diventare nonno, o forse dai suoi amici, che sembrano con le loro domande testare la coppia di giovani fidanzati. Fatto sta che al compleanno della fidanzata, nonostante la volontà di riservatezza di quest’ultima, annuncia con fierezza agli invitati il futuro. Tuttavia la rabbia di Lorenzo, successiva alla scelta di Ninni, è quanto meno comprensibile. La fidanzata non lo rende partecipe di nessun suo ragionamento, non empatizzando minimamente con lui o con i suoi desideri. Allo stesso modo Valentina ha però tutto il diritto di decidere per il suo corpo e per il suo futuro, rifiutando l’atteggiamento manipolatorio, mascherato da vittimismo, di Lorenzo e la pressione della sua famiglia e dei suoi amici.
La vera protagonista del film è Valentina da grande. È attraverso lei che riviviamo tutto ed è solo lei che è riuscita ad affrontare le sfide mostrate nel film. Seguendo la sua giornata lavorativa scopriamo che ha avuto un figlio, ma con un altro uomo, ed è anche diventata talmente talentuosa da essere a capo di una compagnia teatrale. Valentina è quindi un’eroina moderna e la sua storia ci racconta di una ragazza coraggiosa che, crescendo con fatica, ha scelto sia la carriera che la famiglia.
