Director Statement

My body of artistic work consists primarily of exploratory films and audiovisual installations, stemming from my parallel interests in folklore and experimental filmmaking. As both an anthropologist and an experimental media-maker, I explore the ways in which human relationships and culture can be conveyed not through traditional storytelling, but through abstract pairings of sound and visuals.
In all the media I work in, I consider myself a collector of sound and image, an ethnographer of audiovisual culture. I often scour the internet for found images and audio. While I often set out to collect material with a theme in mind, the driving idea behind my artmaking usually emerges in the assemblage process. Through this assemblage process, the theme of simultaneity between the past and the future comes to the forefront of my projects.
Visually, my art is interdisciplinary and hybridized. I use both digital and analog media to construct a graphical pastiche, including direct animation; computer animation; collage; appropriation of found footage; and my own moving and still images, made with 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film as well as digital cameras. I am also a musician, and sound plays a significant role in my artistic practice. My work involves creating a complex soundscape with music, ambient sound, and voiceover that reflects the thematic content of the piece, often emulating my own emotional landscape in abstract ways.
