Night Dreaming

‘Night Dreaming’ is a coming-of-age science fiction story. The film opens on three friends seated around a fire. With the stars and moon out, they look to the sky when one of them, Xander, spots something strange. He believes it was a UFO. However, his sceptical friend, Jazz, doesn't believe this incredulous story. This begs the question: Who should we believe? Xander or Jazz? By the film's end, the viewer must decide who is right and who is wrong.

Director Statement

When an aspiring filmmaker, Xander, spots a UFO he desperately tries to convince his sceptical friend, Jazz, who doesn’t believe him. This leads to a heated argument which gets personal and threatens their friendship.

The film ‘Night Dreaming’ demonstrates how conflict can arise from a difference in perspectives. Xander sees the UFO. Jazz does not. We, as the audience, get to witness the same story from two sides and must decide who we believe.

However, by the film’s end Xander and Jazz see the story from the other’s perspective. So, fighting over who is right and who is wrong is pointless.

I feel like I’ve seen a lot of fights in my life from close-minded people. ‘Night Dreaming’ showcases how an open mind positively affects our relationships with the people who are close to us. It advocates peace, not conflict.

Perspective is one of many themes found in this film. Another would be success. We all have dreams of success and Xander and Jazz are no different.

Xander wants to make films. Jazz wants to make music. They want these things at the highest levels but they both have many uncertainties for the future. What if they don’t ‘make it’?

‘Night Dreaming’ is a reminder I made for myself and others with big dreams.

To summarise:

The road to following our dreams can be a challenging one and it’s easy to lose sight. Life can get in the way. But if we don’t keep going then our dreams will stay exactly that, dreams.
