Director Statement

After reading Catie’s "New Me" script, I immediately knew I wanted to be part of this project. Not only did I resonate with the painful social media comparisons, and the growing pains of being a freshman in college, but her unique approach and assertive comedic writing really drew me to direct the script.

I aimed for the web series to feel friendly, upbeat, and approachable, reflected in the neons, pinks, and purples of the set design, as well as Lucia’s wardrobe.
It was important for me to bring a sense of playfulness and youthfulness, and the upbeat pop style music we chose really complements that. While discussing with Robert, our DP, I opted for mostly handheld follow shots, allowing the actors, particularly Catie, the freedom to move without worrying too much about the frame. My goal was for the acting to feel natural, and realistic while still keeping the upbeat tone of the writing. It was crucial to give Catie all the necessary freedom to play!

I hope that with this series, we can continue the conversation regarding social media and the impact it has on mental health, especially those on vulnerable populations, such as youth and young adults.
