Regina Rios was born in Ciudad Constitución in 1998. She studies Communication Sciences in Mexico, her greatest passions are cinema, journalism and life. Nepantla (2021) is her first short film.
The fear of death has always been present in my life, at least for as long as I can remember. It is useless that my greatest fear is the only safe thing we have. At this moment, death is close to me (conscious death, due to illness) and the knowledge that follows generates great fear for those of us who remain here. In life, we lose so many things and so many people that living well could just be remembering everything we have lost throughout it.
The first time I read Marco Medina's script I had a feeling that is difficult to explain, it fell on me, as they say, like a glove; At a time when I needed to read those words, this story. The different treatments that were given to the script simply gave more strength to something that was already beautiful from the beginning. Nepantla is a story of guilt, sadness, forgiveness, feelings that all of us have ever had in our lives. A film that puts us as main characters a family of three women, like many of those that exist in Mexico, where love can be felt from miles away and strength is present in each of the women in the family.
For me, directing this story is a privilege, based on the trust that my team has in me to allow me to release my feelings and guilt in this great project. I firmly believe that the team is perfect to achieve a sincere, humane, and honest story for all who see it.
In these strange moments that we have been living for a year, and millions of people have lost relatives, I hope from the bottom of my heart that this story resonates for someone, that it could serve as a refuge, a fire for the heart and gasoline to continue to go on.
“I walk around like a ghost, and sometimes I question whether I even exist. Whether I've ever existed at all "
