Private Project

Norms

What if your life was perfect - just not for you?

Sara has it all: a well-paid job, wonderful friends and a stylish apartment that she shares with her long-term girlfriend. Somehow she still feels there is something missing and not even the plans to start a family keep her mind from wandering to secret poetry writing and a not-so-secret affair.

It’s hard to hide in a small community. When she manages to wreck her whole existence in a single day, Sara feels she has to escape from the rumors and from her own failure. With a suitcase full of emotional baggage she moves to a new country, hoping that the magic of Berlin will help her figure out what she wants.

What will she do?

Director Biography - Júlía Margrét Einarsdóttir

Júlía Margrét Einarsdóttir (1987) is a BA Philosophy graduate and has a MA degree in Creative Writing from the University of Iceland. She has also earned an MFA degree in Screenwriting from the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. Júlía has published three works of fiction since 2015 and works as a cultural journalist and writer for The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV). She has also written several screenplays and has experience as a director.

On set Júlía is what you can call an actors-director. In the making of Norms her main emphasis was on the cast, the story and creating a comfortable set. She is all about improvising and bringing out as natural of a performance as possible. This left space for the camera operator, lighting et cetera when it came to the visuals aspects in executing Júlía´s ideas. In the aftermath she collaborated with the editing team in person and through hours of online meetings, contemplating technical solutions and nuances to finalise the story of Sara dealing with the norms of society.

Us in the Lost Shoe Collective all share passion for visual storytelling. We are always looking for the stories around us, listening to different people and hearing what they have to say and what they’ve gone through in their lives. Young people in Berlin and Reykjavik who are all trying to cope within this world, finding out who they are and the difficulties they tend to face in the different relationship they have with each other. It’s a story of laughter, dreams, passion, loss and everything in between. The journey to finding out who you are and what you want to do with your life, and the hurdles you need to overcome on the way. Everyday struggles that everyone can relate to.
