Growing up, I never really fit in with the crowd. I have preferred to be independent. From that I have developed a creative nature and started to draw, write, paint, and play piano but my favorite thing was to let my mind wander. Due to curiosity, I rummaged through my garage, discovering a blocky black piece of plastic. It was an old film camera! Little did I know, I was holding it backwards and after pressing the shutter button I nearly blinded myself due to the flash. It was my first ever photo: a selfie.
After a while, my father bought another camera which had a video feature; I was hooked. I would shoot skits and random clips to show to my family. When I started middle school I decided to create a YouTube channel to post my footage. It became my hobby and shortly after, I knew that I was going to continue this throughout my life. When I wanted to take art seriously that is when pressure from my parents came about. Coming from a Chinese background I was expected to become a doctor or lawyer. My parents didn’t see the arts as a career path. I took the discouragement as motivation to improve my craft. I encouraged myself to keep going, from that I started taking a selfie every day to capture my growth as an individual. It has been four years and counting. What inspires me is the success art brings, besides the awards and contest but the final product that is created. The time and effort put into a single piece of art speaks for itself and it’s a reflection of your vision. I view art as memories marked down into a physical representation. Over the years, I was able to combine the aspects of vision, music, and writing to find my true passion of storytelling through a visual form. My parents now recognize that pursuing the arts has resulted in a growth to my maturity, which has benefited my academic performance. They push me to pursue my dreams and build my own path in life. I am more than just an artist; I am someone who aspires to share experiences and knowledge. Creativity is not something you learn, but the techniques that I will refine over many years will allow me to better manifest my creative vision.
When I wrote the screenplay for NOAH, I was exploring the idea of a loss due. Originally I had the idea of creating a narrative where a couple go to a beach where one of the characters would suddenly go missing in the water. With only given about a month to complete this project I wasn't able to pull it off. I reconstructed my narrative with what NOAH is about today, a youthful and timid boy named Noah, who goes missing on an adventure to the woods with his single parented father named Lee. With the short amount of time that I had I had to complete the screenplay, storyboards, floor plans, and location scouts promptly. Another great aspect to production was the incredible crew who were on board and worked efficiently.
