Writer Statement

I chose to write ,direct this film because it hurts to see so many women being silenced in their families about their desires and fears. As an educated woman, I have traveled around the world
and felt the same universal feeling of how women's voices are not heard. Society crushes the voices of women. Fathers, in-laws, brothers, lovers, friends, and husbands are unaware of the
deepest desires and fears of their female relatives. A daughter-in-law is worth having only if she gives birth to a child. The child is considered a burden, abortion is considered evil by society, and domestic abuse is acceptable in some cases. The film “ Neelu” sheds light on the strength and determination of Neelu's vision to raise her unborn child and give the child the greatest gift—the right to speak for herself.

"Death happens when you kill someone, but death also occurs when you silence them."
