Yi Jiang is an animation director and concept artist, and he just finishes his first animation short film, Mythos of Stratus. Yi used to be an artist of some studios which almost no one had heard in China. Then He decided to learn more and became an international student at Santa Monica College and Cal State University Long Beach during 2015-2021. In these years, Yi has been creating an original Sci-fi world concept, and he decided to make a concept animation as his senior film. Yi Jiang spent the last year of college, work on the film Mythos of Stratus. he gains his BFA degree and graduated in 2021. His biography is a little bit short, but he will keep creating.
In this Sci-fi short film, I want to present a post- apocalyptic world and discuss the relationship between humans, technology, and nature.
Our world was facing many issues, such as climate changing, pollution, and the arising conflict. As a result, I am focused on the concept design of Science fiction that concerns about overdevelopment, new technology, and armed conflict in the future.
I also want to discuss about technology and religion. In my film, Mankind has advanced technology; they created many things, but finally, they were destroyed by them. At last, these old histories all become the old mythos and new religion, and the creations become new deities. I used the name from different mythology in the real world, and reconstruction them as a new mythos.
About this topic I am deeply inspired by Science fiction: A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. and For a Breath I Tarry by Roger Zelazny.
Mythos of Stratus combines traditional 2d animation, puppetry animation, and motion graphics. I think this is the most effective way to produce animation with a complex story with relatively high quality for me. I use some steampunk, cultural element, and paper cut effect for the visual development.
