Barry Smyth is a Director and Writer from Longford, in the midlands of Ireland. He has lived and worked around the world as a writer and makes up one third of Dolmen Films, a production house based in the West of Ireland.
His writing and films are inspired by old and contemporary stories of Ireland and its people; whether they are funny, moving or scary.
His recent short story, "Sprawl", was published alongside works by the likes of Colm Tóibín in the Ropes Literary Journal.
His short films like "Mystic Minnie" intend the push the boundaries of the production quality available to low budget films with ambitious settings and plots.
"Mystic Minnie" was the product of the rich history of the village I grew up around; Ardagh, Longford. Although it has always been a picturesque spot, it's equally the home of many mischievous characters, corner boys and other types looking to pull a fast one.
My Father told me stories of how fascinating it was when anyone from abroad came to the village and this gave rise to a story about the appearance of a seemingly supernatural American being told by a less than reputable source.
We were very lucky to get a hugely talented ensemble cast of actors together and were able to shoot the film on location in Lyon's Pub in Ardagh, which has been beautifully maintained since the 1950s.
The film was a real labor of love and a great opportunity to really hit the upper limit of what's possible on a micro budget.
