My Wings

My Wings is a visual poem about a guy who is always being distracted and prevented from trying, by the fear of making mistakes. The film shows how he starts something but never finishes anything. The sound of the reflections of his feelings and the oppression that he feels flows with a voice-over poem while the film goes on with the subtractive representation of suppression that squeezes his subconscious. He "inhales" and can't "exhale" for the end of the little moment of his journey.

Director Statement

I aimed to show the psychological state of mind of a person who always stands as someone’s shadow visually, auditorily, and symbolically. A person who is always one step behind the “try”, and two steps behind the “failure”. I wanted to show the physical representation of his feelings and habits visually while telling his feelings auditorily with a voice-over of a poem. In the film, you will see a guy who is always trying to do something but never finishes. He is always being held back by a power, a thought, or the oppression of someone (I wanted to make that “thing” uncertain in order to let the audience have their own experiences through the film) just before he passes the “trying” line because of his habit of being afraid of making mistakes. And you will hear his feelings, silent supplications for wanting a breakpoint with an abstractive “language” of him.
While writing the poem (You Cut My Wings Before I Learned to Fly), I got inspired by the writing style of Thom Yorke and his music. I let the words flow in my mind while listening to his music and turned the feelings that I felt into the character‘s feelings in the film. In the poem, I tried to achieve reflecting the psychological effects of his state of mind with the words in a “cloudy” way.
