Melissa Bahrum is a graduate of Macquarie University's Bachelor of Arts program majoring in Media. She was involved in many productions at university including various short films and a web series, N'everland, which she co-created. Melissa was a video editor with the Seven Network in Sydney, before moving to Japan in late 2018. My Queen is her short film debut as a writer and director.
My Queen is intended to be an uplifting, comedic piece, with realistic and relatable characters. Daniel’s transformation also has greater symbolic meaning in the current Australian climate. Daniel’s search for acceptance can be seen as representative of the struggle that other LGBTQ+ people face in accepting themselves and more broadly, being accepted by Australian society, something largely affirmed by the recent groundbreaking marriage equality survey to finally legalise gay marriage in Australia. This film is a reflection of that and also a celebration, hopefully, marking more to come.
