Musical Tone
MUSICAL TONE - Animations of Musical Instruments by Frequency

Randy Wilson is a musician who has been immersed in the field from the age of four. Like many creative people, his interests grew in other areas; photography, graphic art, film, and more. Over time, he became an all around creator on the Mac and has worked for Apple. Although involved in photography and graphic design for decades, he has started producing animated videos recently due to his development of a system to create detailed three dimensional images from music.
Films & Screenings - These 3D animations of music have been screened at the Athens Animation Marathon, the Hollywood Screenings Film Festival, the Berlin Flash Film Festival, the Los Angeles Cinefest, Colorado International SciFi & Fantasy Film Festival, The Sound & Vision International Festival in NYC, and the CyberiaVR Film Festival.
Art & Photography - Randy was a finalist in Denver’s Cherry Creek Arts Festival’s “Five Years Out Challenge” supporting work that will influence art in the future. His artwork has also been displayed at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, the HUD Gallery in Ventura, CA and the Arc Gallery in San Francisco. Randy has expertise with Adobe, Apple, and other software used for graphic art, design, photography, and 3D animation.
Composer/Musician - Accomplished composer, instrumentalist, and singer. Randy’s music is distributed on iTunes and by other online vendors, CDs, and a music-for-picture library, as well as used in films and videos.
Digital Audio Developer - Randy has developed and patented a system for unique 3D displays of music and audio with numerous applications in the fields of entertainment, education, pro audio, and more. He’s helped develop cutting edge audio and music products for leading Silicon Valley companies.
Personal - He has lived near San Francisco for over a dozen years with his wife and daughter after many years in Silicon Valley.
From Beethoven to Kandinsky artists and musicians have dreamed of portraying music visually. I build virtual 3D worlds from the frequencies of music. Notes and other important musical events are clearly seen in these animations. The challenge is in presenting these shapes in ways that capture the spirit of the music. This is a true intersection of visual art, music, and technology.
I have animated phrases from recordings of famous music by Bach, Beethoven, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Erik Satie, and The Who.
To create these videos, a passage of music is analyzed for its frequency content (what we hear as the pitches and tone of the music) thousands of times. Up to one hundred thousand “slices” of the analysis are strung together to assemble a 3D terrain.
After viewing my work, a man told me he will never think of music the same way again. A woman says she is dreaming of musical mountains. I invite you to explore these worlds of sound. To literally see music as never before.
