“Mumbai 400008 – A story of betrayal, pain and desperation” is an insightful documentary which highlights the struggle for survival of commercial sex workers during Pandemic Covid-19. It highlights the predicament of destitution faced by the commercial sex workers in Asia’s the oldest and largest district – Kamathipura.
The documentary film, depicts how 7000 plus sex workers from Kamathipura, Falkland Road, Faras Road went penniless in lockdown. As the trade of prostitution totally depending on physical intimacy and touch, was ensured to be under strictest of strict locked down so as the contagious coronavirus doesn’t spread in city.
“Mumbai 400008 – A story of betrayal, pain and desperation”- the film portrays the Pandora of problems of commercial sex workers surfaced during pandemic. How daily earning and daily spending forced them to fall in pit of debt. It also narrates trafficking story of each sex worker.
The documentary - “Mumbai 400008 – A story of betrayal, pain and desperation” high spots how despite directive by the Supreme Court of India to provide financial assistance, food grains, masks and sanitizers to 9 lakhs sex workers and transgender botched up.
It focusses how the commercial sex workers’ despite being integral part of the society remain invisible both for society as well as government. It also depicts on the struggle of commercial sex workers to get recognition rights of ‘informal workers’ in the society.
