Creating dreams and hope through cinema is our vision. Returning Japan to the glory days of cinema for young filmmakers and independent artists is the goal of The Mt. Fuji – Atami Film & VR Festival. The Mt. Fuji Atami Film & VR Festival provides the perfect place for independent filmmakers and virtual reality creators to show their talents and art to the Japanese as well as people from around the world. The Mt. Fuji – Atami Film & VR Festival aspires to become Japan’s premiere, world-class film and virtual reality festival.

Our Jury includes some of Japan's top filmmakers and other famous filmmakers as Jury members from around the world. (Members to be announced soon).

Our categories include:
*Narrative Feature
*Narrative Short
*Documentary Feature
*Music Videos
*Virtual Reality and New Media

Because of our partners, award winners and nominated films can be eligible for theatrical distribution in Japan. Awards also are given to Virtual Reality winners.

The Mt. Fuji – Atami Film & VR Festival (MFAFF) is an annual film festival meant to showcase innovative independent cinema and new virtual reality from around the world by up-and-coming artists. As well as award-winning works selected by our sister festival in Europe: The Raindance Film Festival.

MFAFF hopes to be the voice and representation for films with a unique voice and message, regardless of how low the budget might be.

We are aiming to inspire, motivate and award new talent with a revitalized film festival that all of Japan can be proud of.

The Mt. Fuji – Atami Film & VR Festival accepts all forms and genres: short films, medium length films, feature films, drama, experimental, comedy, horror, slow cinema, science fiction, fantasy, animation, documentary and we allow for special prizes for students and films shot in Atami. We also have a special Virtual Reality showcase for new Virtual Reality projects and creators.

We aspire to become Japan’s most famous and successful film and Virtual Reality festival.

The second Mt. Fuji – Atami Film & VR Festival will take place beginning 28 June ~ 1 July, 2019 in Atami, Japan (Just 40 minutes from Tokyo by bullet train).

MFAFF isn’t just all about screening a fabulous list of new and exciting films over its four-day event. There are also professional workshops led by experts in the industry, Q&A’s held with the attending filmmakers after every screening session and a chance to network with fellow filmmakers, producers, agents, industry representatives, prospective film buyers and, of course, the cinema-loving public.

Above all, we are proud to welcome you all to Atami, Japan and our filmmakers’ festival!

Honored to be a part of the first Atami Film Festival. Great atmosphere and picturesque location. One of the top tier Japanese film festivals in terms of professionalism, organization and quality. The domestic distribution connections are what make this festival essential for independent filmmakers.

I am so proud to be part of this festival. I enjoyed so many good films and met great Film makers both from Japan and other countries. What impressed me the most is the hospitality of the committee, they treated us film makers like Super Stars and they invited really famous and influential personalities in the entertainment industry to party and interact with us, that was a great experience and opportunity for us independent film makers. As this was their first event, there were some few shortcomings. I think the projector in Sunmi Hotel needs to
be replaced with a better one. Also it's better to hire and recruit more experienced translators as there are many foreigner guests and please also look into improving the ticket selling and make it more
efficient and clear. Just my personal request, I hope that the screenings will be all done on Weekends. My movie was screened on a Friday afternoon, so many of the people I invited didn't make it because they have jobs, however the other movies in the same category (Independent Short films)had a jam packed room because their screening day was held on a Sunday and many guests were able to come. For me the number of audience who watched my film is more important than awards. Other than these things I mentioned above the event was a success! Atami is the best place to hold a film festival because it's not too far away from Tokyo and it has a very nostalgic old Japanese local town. Not only that visitors can see great movies produced from around the world but they can also experience the fine traditional Japanese tourism activities like Hot springs, sightseeing of good landscapes (Beach and Mountains) and dining in authentic Japanese restaurants. I believe that The Mt. Fuji Atami International Film and VR Festival has a very bright future ahead. I am looking forward to your events in the future and I definitely want to join again! Congratulations and More Power!
