Director Biography - Jim Valkanis

I am Jim Valkanis and I am from Melbourne, Australia.
Since high school, I've had a passion for watching films. Since leaving High school I always wanted to make a short film myself. And with saving enough money and putting together a team of creative artists, I've completed my first short film Mr.Mellow & Bones.
I'm excited to share Mr.Mellow & Bones with the world and wish to tell more stories in the future.

Director Statement

“Mr.Mellow & Bones” was brought to life from my own experience while watching animated shorts at film festivals.
I felt like they lacked a story, something that animated features have. I found most to be gloomy or a re-telling of someone’s life like a documentary.
I personally wanted to create something authentic, something that the audience would enjoy, laugh at, a story that people would remember.

“Mr.Mellow & Bones” is inspired by early cartoons from the 1930s that used Rubber hose animation. We tried as much as possible to make the film as authentic as possible.
All the backgrounds were hand painted using watercolour and we even got a jazz band to record the score!

Mr.Mellow & Bones is a original animation that lives up to the authenticity & story of those old cartoons that we all love and cherish.
