Moving In Between
Erika was born as the first son to a family in Taipei. When working in Tokyo, she embarks on the journey of relieving the suppressed feminine self. After returning to Taipei, she continues to pursue her goal of getting surgery and registering gender change while tackling the conflicts with her family. Although the journey of fulfilling her dream is already tough, the path to reconciliation with her family is even more challenging.
This film documents Erika’s life journey of gradually building up her ideal body image, including when she completes the sexual reassignment surgery (SRS) and moves to Japan. Through Erika’s experience, this documentary sheds light on the unique life trajectory of transgender people fighting their way through the social system. On the other hand, through the perspective of Erika’s sister, the documentary also presents how the family reacts to and deals with the shock.

Born in Taipei, 1993, Chia-Hsuan Tsai majored in atmospheric sciences in college, then enrolled in the College of Communication at the National Chengchi University and received a master's degree. “Moving In Between” was created for her graduation project and is her first documentary film.
She is especially interested in gender issues and different cultures, hoping to capture the richness of the world in her own style.
Gender power is deeply embedded in our life. We are all likely to challenge gender norms and fight social pressures sometimes. In the past, some sharp criticisms of transgender have confused me. How do we understand transgender? How is their pursuit of the ideal self affected by structural forces such as medical care, law, and social values?
The exploration of gender will never end. I am very grateful to Erika and many transgender friends for sharing their precious stories with me. I expect myself to create better works in the future to demonstrate and celebrate the diversity of gender.
