More Than a Number: A Dance Concert

"More Than a Number" was created to serve as an exploration of identity, how we perceive ourselves as well as those around us, and the methods we utilize to do so. We know what we understand ourselves to be, but what labels and lenses do we use to describe that identity to others, and why do they matter? Through my research of the Enneagram types, I was able to construct a dance concert with nine pieces to help explore and examine shared traits and experiences that are particular to each type. The goal of the concert was to create dances that display the things that set us apart but also allow us to see that though we perceive the world and each other in different ways, we also share experiences that are essential to humanity as a collective.

Director Statement

"I created “More Than A Number” intending to explore how we perceive our identity as well as the identities of those around us, and why we use the lenses and frameworks we do to help define us. I chose to explore this by specifically using the Enneagram types. For those who are less familiar, the Enneagram is a typology system that uses nine different interwoven personality types to detail and define the intricacies of the human personality. As described by author Ian Morgan Crow, the Enneagram 'helps people understand who they are and what makes them tick'.

Something unique about each of these pieces is that all of my dancers identify as the type they are dancing in this concert. This allowed me to ensure that the experiences that I was choreographing resonated with the dancers in a personal way, and I hope you can see that throughout these pieces. I hope that, if nothing else, what you take away from this concert is that although we may define ourselves in one way, we can resonate with experiences that are not always shared with the people most similar to us. To me, “More Than a Number” speaks to the fact that though we choose to label ourselves a certain way in our day-to-day lives, we are also individuals whose identities expand beyond definition."
