I am Mr.SPIN, a rapper from Kochi, Kerala, India and this is my latest rap music video which addresses the burning issue of unsustainable sand mining (amongst other environmental hazards) at Alappad. The hard-hitting rap music video, written, directed and performed by myself, includes footage of the sand mining and related protests in Alappad; interspersed with imagery of the floods that ravaged Kerala in 2018.
The lyrics primarily project incidents of human carelessness and selfishness that I have been seeing around me. As a state having recently experienced the worst floods in a century, we really ought to wake up and act - before disasters strike again.
More than a hundred days have passed since the "Save Alappad‟ strike started, protesting the irresponsible sand mining activities. Not much has changed. The residents of this mineral-rich
coastal land still live in fear every passing day - worried about the future of their birthplace. Continuous sea washing and sand mining by two public sector undertakings, Indian Rare Earths and Kerala Metals and Minerals, have resulted in extreme soil erosion. And this is continuing to cause the sea to encroach upon the adjoining land. From 89 sq. km in the 1950s, the land area in Alappad is now a paltry 8 sq. km. One of the locals of the village pointed to the sea and told me, "That was where we used to play cricket, just five years ago‟. The agony in his voice was palpable. Surprisingly, even though Kerala has traditionally championed many environment-related causes, this escalating issue has received very little attention.
