Lu Yaode was born in 2003 in rural Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, and is currently studying Directing at Zhejiang University of Media and Communications. A certified e-sports competitor and a child of the land, he draws creative inspiration from real-life settings and personal experiences.
During university, he gained extensive filmmaking experience, serving as the second assistant cinematographer for the feature film Qiantang River, which premiered in the Asian New Talent section of the Shanghai International Film Festival. In his second year, he directed the documentary River Tracing, winning second prize at the Ningbo International Microfilm Festival. In his third year, he created the VR documentary Memories of the Past, which was featured in the “Me and My Era: Contemporary Chinese High-Tech Visual Art Exhibition.” He also directed the narrative short Moist, and is currently working on his graduation project Ark, which has received top-tier funding from Zhejiang University of Media and Communications.
Set in 2023, this short film tells the story of three young people whose seemingly ordinary hiking trip turns into a farewell to life. Based on true events, the film aims to shed light on social realities, drawing attention to marginalised and vulnerable groups within our society. In the face of life’s relentless challenges, they find themselves pushed to the edge, left with no way out.
Through this film, I hope to explore their struggles for survival and perhaps even inspire social change. I use extensive handheld camera work to capture the subtle interactions and conversations among the three young people contemplating a shared fate. Clues are carefully embedded in their dialogues and actions, with everyday moments revealing deeper, hidden narratives.
I sincerely hope this film can create social awareness, encouraging people to care more about those in need and ultimately fostering a better, more compassionate world.
