Director Biography - Ryan Bodell

Writer/Director Ryan Bodell was born in Croxteth, Liverpool, and raised there during the tumultuous times when the area was plagued by gun crime and gang wars. He studied Film and filmmaking for almost 7 years, though it was his jobless days after graduation, spent in the Cinema or watching movies at home that his Cinematic Education really started. After working as a crew member on several shorts throughout college and university, and a little on-set experience on a low-budget local feature film, "Misophonia" serves as his Directorial Debut. He currently works as an Usher in the Cinema where he spent most of his childhood, and dedicates most of his time outside that to writing. Ryan intends to write and direct a few more shorts in the very near future, one of which will serve as proof of concept for "Pink Lemonade", his Queer Coming-of-age Crime Drama set in his hometown, partly inspired by real events.

Director Statement

My little brother has always been an outrageously noisy eater, and for as long as I can remember, that's driven me crazy. The chewing, the lip smacking, the food tossing and turning in the mouth...

But it was only when we were locked down together that I truly believed that it might drive me crazy.

As I often do in trying times, I turned to writing, and channelled all of my anger - my overwhelming, unrelenting anger - in to writing the script for this movie.

Misophonia is the disorder in which certain sounds trigger dramatic reactions and overwhelming anger - and more often than not the sound in question is the sound of somebody chewing. Filmed in one Liverpools oldest houses and produced on a shoestring budget, my ambition with this movie was to replicate that sensation through the Cinematography and sound Design - to make the audience feel that anger, to feel the disgust, and somehow, by the end of it, sympathise with the psychopath.

Taking this idea from a script to a short was an incredibly gratifying and inspiring experience; though I studied film for 7 years, and have been a part of the production on a few shorts and features, this is the first time I feel it's ever truly been mine; my idea, my ambition, my creation. Filmed in the style of a Classic Hollywood Horror - opening with an overture, and some old style credits, it's visually distinct - showcasing my visual flair, and Cinematic eye - and more technically challenging than I ever expected, but it only made me even more determined to spend my life building worlds, and telling stories.
